During the process of writing our Language and Literacy narratives I have learned the significance of our mother tongue. Additionally, the influence our attitudes have towards language/literacy standards. The narratives we wrote assisted us on reflecting on our personal journeys and experiences with learning a language. Many of us shared similar stories that dealt with emotions of anxiety, embarrassment and even discrimination. Although native speakers can relate to some of these topics, first generation Americans were the primary target audience for most of our narratives. Through writing my story I was able to mull over my journey through learning English and then relearning Polish. I came to realize that the obstacles I encountered were shared experiences with many of my peers. I think that by embracing the diversity of our tongues we are able to foster an environment that encourages learning new perspectives and ideas.
